Tour of Utah 2015

One of our favorite traditions is watching the Tour of Utah each year. It's a seven day professional bike race that has achieved world-class status.
The opening ceremony is one of our favorite parts. The pro riders are introduced and they give away free stuff. Like these awesome glasses.
This was the first day Krew started feeling normal after his tonsillectomy. It was so good to see him feeling like himself again.

I was really bad this year about taking pictures of the pros but I did pretty good about taking pictures of this future pro. Krew does the kids' race every year. He loves it!

There are dozens of kids that participate in the race and to keep things fair, they break the kids up into age groups.

Krew and one other kid quickly broke away from the peloton.

They were neck and neck until the very end.
Krew ultimately took first. Newspaper/Media was waiting at the finish line and got Krew's information for the Park City Newspaper.
I love that Krew loves cycling just like his Dad. His future is bright!

Tonsillectomy, Adenoidectomy, And Ear Tubes

From the time Krew was about 3-years-old he has snored louder than most grown men. Along with snoring he also had sleep apnea. He also had ear infections constantly. So we made an appointment with the ENT and it was discovered that Krew has enormously huge tonsils. Not only does he have huge tonsils, but he also has a bifid uvula (Which we've know about since birth). Krew liked to call it his snake tongue uvula.
Because of the bifid uvula, the ENT couldn't remove the entire adenoid or else Krew would sound nasally, which made surgery just a bit more complicated than it normally would.

The day before Krew's surgery, on July 21, we made it a fun day. Which almost always means Thanksgiving Point. This day we went to The Gardens.
July is the perfect time of year to go, when the flowers are in full bloom.

I love how much these two love each other!

Burn off some energy kids! I'll wait for you down here.

Then it was off to the store to stock up on Jello, Popsicles, and ice cream. At this point, Krew was super excited to get the surgery knowing this would be his diet for the next several days.

July 22, 2015
My wonderful sister-in-law, Chelsea came over the morning of Krew's surgery to watch Myla.
 They worked on yoga moves
and walked Harvey where Chelsea captured one of my favorite pictures of Myla.
Meanwhile at the hospital, Krew was all prepped for surgery. He was so brave!
I on the other hand was not. It is the worst feeling to watch them wheel your baby away.

Not too much longer (but what also felt like a lifetime) The ENT came back to give us the news that Krew was out of surgery and was doing great. He also told us the tooth fairy came to visit while Krew was asleep. They had to pull his front tooth because it was slightly loose and they didn't want to risk aspiration.

Next, the Doctor showed us Krew's tonsils. For Krew's size, his tonsils were enormous!

Having him wake up from anesthesia was one of the worst parts. He was confused and in pain. Poor Krew.

We got him dressed and ready to head home. This sad face breaks my heart!

A few days post surgery, Jorden had a bike race up in Idaho Falls. So he took Myla up with him so I could have one-on-one time taking care of Krew.
I got a darling picture of Grandma with Myla and cousin Lindley.

And this picture. This was a post-race selfie. Obviously it was a painful race.

Krew did a lot of laying around. While I worked on homework for awhile.

He also got a Lego set from Grandma and Grandpa Backman
And I let him pick out another toy. I'm a sucker when my kids are sick or in pain!

On July 24th (Pioneer Day). Krew and I got a slurpee and drove around to find a good spot to watch the fireworks. We parked in a church parking lot and watched out the sunroof.

I thought Krew would be all over the ice cream but the only thing he wanted was half way melted Popsicles mixed with Sprite. After seeing his throat, I could see why nothing sounded appetizing for him. Sorrry for the gory picture. This is post-op day 3.

As soon as the swelling in Krew's throat came down, he constantly commented on how he felt like his throat is a huge hole now. Here is his throat almost a year later. The Doctor did not fix the bifid uvula but having the tonsils removed helps it fall into place.
Krew has also not had a single ear infection since the tubes were placed. As physically and emotionally painful as this was, it's been so worth it!

Lotoja 2014

Once again Jorden rode in Lotoja. The 206 mile bike race from Logan, Utah to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
The cheering squad was ready to go!
Krew gets so excited to watch Jorden that I honestly believe it won't be long before they do this ride together.

This year Blake did the race as a relay; so after he rode his 100+ miles he stayed with the cheering squad.
To say my kids adore him would be an understatement.

We found a perfect spot to sit and wait for the boys to ride by. It was Jorden, his dad Brad, and Blake's Father-in-law Craig that we were waiting for to come by.
We had a beautiful view to look at while we sat and waited.

Here they come!

Wahoo!!!

 And there they go!

Being in the car from 6am to 10pm feels like an eternity especially with 2 kids in the car. So the finish line feels so wonderful. I'm sure Jorden felt the same way.

Spiderman came to the finish line.

 DONE!

A congratulatory hug from Myla.

Then the leg cramps starting coming on.
In all honesty, you'd never guess that he had just rode 206 miles. He hardly looked sweaty and tired. Apparently he's a machine!

These 3 are awesome! I'm so glad they have this common hobby that they can enjoy together.

Let's not forget about the support crew. Getting all of the food and drinks ready at each rest stop and being able to find each rest stop is no easy feat!

Proud kids!

Krew was just a little bit excited!

So proud of him.
